  • Coati in Chinese Calligraffiti

长鼻浣熊 -literally Long-nosed bear – is the name for the Coatimundi in Chinese.

The artist is a true-life Coati bite survivor, and Coati is his tag and the name on his Asian Calligraphy seals (chops).

Never trust Coatis in Honduras, and never stick your finger out to them if they are in a cage in a random gas station near El Progresso. Remember the long nose?

C監房 – Cell Block C Japanese Version, written to express opposition to the current abusive treatment of immigrants that is reminiscent of the treatment of Japanese Americans during World War II, such as at the artist’s home town, Salinas, CA, and the Minidoka Internment Camp in Idaho.

    私たちは疲れ果てた者たちを
    貧しき者たちを自由に息をす
    ることを渇望し身を寄せ合う
    群衆を裏切った彼らは今も追
    われ打ちのめされC監房の中
    で息をしようともがいている

We betrayed the exhausted and the poor—
    the throngs who huddled together,
    yearning to breathe freely.
    Even now, hounded and battered,
    they struggle to draw breath
within the confines of Cell Block C.

“Cell Block C” by Jared Hawk. Original poetic material, graffiti artwork, and photograph by Jared Hawk, created September 13, 2026, at the Legal Graffiti Wall, Railroad Ave, Twin Falls, Idaho 83301, United States.

    Cell Block C

    Give me your tired,
    Your poor,
    Your huddled masses
    Yearning to breathe free

    Here they are hunted,
    and spurned,
    and beaten and burned,
    inside Cell Block C

    -Jared Hawk

First stanza quotes Emma Lazarus, “The New Colossus” (1883). Created September 13, 2026, at the Legal Graffiti Wall, Railroad Ave, Twin Falls, ID 83301, United States. First stanza quotes Emma Lazarus,
    “The New Colossus” (1883).

Author’s Note: Some have called this a subversion of the original poem. It is not. It is a juxtaposition of what our pledge to the people of the world was with how they are treated now. All people deserve due process, protection, safety, medical care and the right of communication. People on death row are treated like kings compared to the current treatment of the powerless and desperate.
